Every end has a new beginning!

It is important to be well rested and eat well during exam time. Dates, beans and plenty of water. In case you block out or get sleepy, go for a brisk walk or sit somewhere in silence. Also, try to stay away from any distraction such as excessive use of chat rooms and online games, watching the news or arguing with a loved one.

Simply master the skill of staying focused which means keeping your mind set on one thing and having positive thoughts. You might be surprised at the results.

Best of luck in this exam period and many more best wishes for the semesters to come.

Reviewing for exams:

Almost no one can ace a test without truly studying and understanding the material. If you really want to score good marks, you will need to have thoroughly prepared yourself for the content of the test far in advance.

In addition, there are several techniques that you can use in the few days, hours, and minutes before the exam that can help boost your performance.

Know what you're being tested on. Take all the mini assignments (worksheets, study guides, etc.) from the class your studying for and have them all at hand, if you study those you should ace your test.

Revise, summarize, review. You can either study this information, or sum it up by typing a report that includes everything that you think will be on the test.

Remember: SQ3R:
Survey
: Scan your book for the most important things (They may be in bold, italics, or something else that makes it stand out)
Question: Make practice questions and DO NOT write the answers
Read: Skim your material or read it actively
Recite: Answer your questions you have previously written down (Hint: Talk out loud!)
Review: Review this process until you have it down.

Never cram the night before or morning of the test. Contrary to common belief this doesn't help in the least. Take your time to practice and study with a good number of time. Also, make sure you use multiply examples on the subject and practice them over and over again. This is normally helpful in Math and Science.

Tips on Reading Exams

Before you start taking an examination, read it through. Sometimes the first time that you read a question, you will be extremely overwhelmed by it. However, reading the test thoroughly will give you more time to let the question sink in.
• Read it through more than once if need be. However, do not waste a lot of time only in the reading exam.
• Read the directions carefully. While reading the directions, put your pen down. Do not answer any questions." Most students will go right to the questions without reading the directions at all...
• Go through the questions slowly. Do not skip words, and do not assume that you know that the question is asking. Make sure that you always read the questions thoroughly. If you provide a wonderful answer, but it is an answer to the wrong question, you are not going to get any points.
• Watch out for key words. If the question says "yes" or "no," and is a true or false question, the answer is most likely false. That being said, there are exceptions to every rule.
• Look for the most basic meaning. The reason why so many extremely intelligent students do not test well is because they look for deep and hidden meanings of questions.

Following Directions: A skill worth learning

No names on papers? No titles on compositions? No answers rounded to the nearest tenth? Many teachers find themseleves confronting such problems while grading papers, because our students may not be paying attention to directions. In order to be a successful student you have to recognize the importance of reading instructions thoroughly and following them.

Unfortunately, in the rush to complete assignments, students often race past directions to get to the "meat" of their work but some teachers have hidden the answer to a simple question, or a hint to a tougher one, within the directions of an exam, just to encourage students to read the directions!

Teachers of some students may craft a page of instructions that students must read in their entirety before beginning to work and include as the last one, "Ignore all of the directions above and turn in your paper." See if you can understand and follow the instructions for the following exercise.

On a lined sheet of paper perform the following tasks

  1. Write your name first name on the last line of the paper at the left-hand margin.
  2. On the first line on the paper write the numbers 1 through 9. Start at the left and print the numbers. Leave a space between each number.
  3. Circle the number 6.
  4. Draw a star in the upper left-hand corner of the page.
  5. Fold your paper in half the long way.
  6. Open up your paper, then fold it the opposite way.
  7. Use the tip of your pencil to poke a hole in the center of the paper (the place where the two folds meet).
  8. Draw a heart around the hole you made in your paper.
  9. Write the first initial of your last name in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
  10. On the last line on the page, write the word done near the right margin.
Do you understand what you were asked to do and did you do it in the correct order? In the exams you will take starting next week, make sure you read and understand the instructions carefully BEFORE you begin answering the questions. If you have any questions make sure to ask the invigilators in your exam room. They are there to help you for those times when you don't understand instructions. Good luck!
